Cilantro-Lime Kohl Slaw

Image
This recipe is from the wonderful book Field To Feast .   It was given to me by the lovely folks down at Front Porch Pickings .  It is a book that features local (Florida) farmers and chefs and what they like to do with some of Florida's wonderful produce.   This particular recipe comes to us from Superganic Farm of Pensacola .  The owner calls the farm superganic because of his biodynamic method of treating the soil like a living organism.  That kind of information is what I love about this book. I am not sure we got these particular kohlrabi from this farm, but I know that FPP does use some of these farms, but it makes me so happy to see farmers who are committed to being responsible stewards of the land they work.  Not to mention that local food always taste better and has more nutrients as it has minimal processing and transport time.  The environmental benefits exceed just reducing chemical use, and include lessening the use of the ...

Asian-Style Pork Burgers

Image
I was totally at a loss about what to make tonight. I had a short list of recipes for this week, but as I prepared to go to the grocery, I went back to the 'to try' file and looked for something easy and fast. I had this burger in there for a while now and I never made it because I thought it would be too plain. I am so happy that I was so very wrong! It was simplicity incarnate! All I needed to so was slice, grate, mix, cook and... ambrosia! The consensus around the table was a 4.5 out of 5. Keep in mind we have become a bit snobby about food in general much less burgers! We were all pretty happily surprised by how tasty this was. This recipe was from Food & Wine magazine and they haven't steered me wrong... well ever is a bit of an exaggeration but 95% of the time their recipes are winners in my family. I followed the recipe pretty much to a tee except for the rice wine vinegar. I like the roasted garlic version of it. (Oh and I mixed up the sriracha and mayo to the s...

Chipotle-Bacon Turkey Burger

Image
I gave my son a list of possible dinner options for tonight, and he chose (of course) the one burger on the list.  I was ok with the idea, but I was sure my husband would be a little annoyed. (he has had to try too many burgers, too recently)  I know burgers are inherently good, and this one was no exception.  We all totally dug it.  I was really pleased that, as far as burgers go, it was a bit, and only a bit, lighter.  Why?  It had turkey instead of beef, no mayo (ok in the coleslaw there was mayo) and no cheese.  I did use ground turkey instead of ground turkey breast; it was cheaper and my boys like dark meat better.  The only really "bad" ingredient was the bacon. The biggest problem was it was a Dagwood like sandwich.  It was huge and unwieldy to eat.  I think less meat next time; I even used slightly less meat than called for. The ketchup  was nice.  It had just enough heat but not overwhelmingly so.  And,...

Fish Tacos

Image
Well the fish tacos were originally on the menu for the night of too many dishes, but since one of my "A-list" guests was unable to attend (and they wanted to try them) and we had too many dishes, the tacos were postponed to tonight.  There will be no recipe for the tacos, (sorry) because I don't usually give it out.  It is, in many ways, your typical fish taco with the fried fish and slaw in the flour tortilla, but there are a few extras that make it ours. (Not to mention I think the recipes for the fish and slaw are pretty tasty) I won't put it out there just in the off chance I ever get to open a restaurant because it will most likely be our signature dish. :p  If you have it, feel lucky! It is one of those dishes we feel real ownership over.  Yes, we did research on the recipes for the elements, but each one was tweaked by one of us to fit and it is one of those dishes we love so much we need to parcel out the times we eat it so we don't ...
